This was actually my 3rd safari… read more with Jacob in Tanzania, dating back to 2001 when I first met Jacob when he was our walking safari guide in the Monduli mountains when I was 17years old and visiting East Africa for the first time with my parents. We have stayed friends ever since. We enjoyed a 2nd trip with Jacob in 2009, when he led us across the Serengeti to Lake Victoria on a custom safari.

This year, it was a thrill to return almost 25 years after my first trip, now with my wife and two children, ages 8 and 10, for their first safari experience. We could not have asked for a better safari ! Jacob was extremely thoughtful and flexible in helping us design this safari to fit the unique needs of our family. For this trip, we had been living in Western Kenya for the month of January supporting community health project on Lake Victoria. Jacob agreed to travel all the way across Tanzania to pick us up at the Kenya/Tanzania border at Sirari. He then helped us organize a thoughtful itinerary that balanced time driving in the vehicle, enjoying wildlife, and allowing our kids to relax and explore. On our 6 night/7 day safari we spent 2 nights at a tented camp in Serengeti National Park, a day in Ngorongoro Crater, a day in Karatu, and 2 nights at Tarangire national park. This was a perfect duration for our young family.

Jacob was a very safe and careful driver. Our vehicle was comfortable and had everything we needed to enjoy the parks safely. Jacob was a great teacher and guide, explaining the natural history and unique features of the wildlife in ways that my kids could enjoy and understand. Jacob also organized a cultural walking safari for us where we got to explore life in Tanzanian villages, and he shared a great deal about his own traditional Maasai upbringing. Our lodges were outstanding, delicious food, clean rooms, accommodating staff. Jacob did a great job selecting and booking all our reservations, and made this extremely hassle free on our end. Above all, we found this safari to be very affordable in comparison to other large international tour companies, and the level of personal attention, flexibility, and cultural awareness was unrivaled. This made for a very authentic, culturally-responsive and personalized safari experience.

We look forward to booking future trips with African Wildcats and will be definitely sending friends and family here when anyone asks us for a recommendation for a locally-owned and outstanding safari company. Asante Sana!

This is the experience of a lifetime!  – We got back from our safari-trip two weeks ago and it is still impossible to completely process the experience.

Our amazing guide Jacob found us the sweetest spots… read more for wildlife-watching, always knew where to find the animals (without a com-radio by the way) and where to place the car for the best view and he did everything with a deep respect for the animals. Jacob is a local guy with great knowledge not only about the animals but also about the history and culture of the Maasai.

For our first day I thought we would drive directly to our lodge, and I did not expect any game drive. But sure enough, right away we had lions, elephants, hippos and giraffe. I was blown away!
We opted for a package deal and Jacob arranged the accommodation for us. The lodges we stayed at were really comfortable tentlodges with a luxurious feel to them and the food was great. Sleeping right in the Serengeti national park was awesome, and not as scary as it may sound!

The coming days we had beautiful encounters: a big family of 21 elephants all by ourselves, met a hippo walking out of water, saw cheeta, hyena, leopard and lions, to name a few.
Thanks to Jacobs guidingskills we got to meet many animals without the big crowds (when lions are close to the road there can be more than 10 cars there at the same time trying to get a look at the animals).

I think the very best experience would be the big family of elephants, or having breakfast with 6 resting lions without any other cars around (it´s hard to choose).

We had 4 days in Serengeti and 1 day in the Ngorongoro crater. In hindsight we should have had more days.

Epic Safari Adventures  – There are not enough superlatives to accurately describe how fantastic a African Wildcats Expeditions safari truly is. This is my second time travelling with the company, and should I… read more have the good fortune to return to Tanzania again, it will not the last. For the eleven nights/twelve days spent in country my wife and I did not worry about a thing as they arranged the entire trip. This included JRO airport pickup and drop-off, securing our lodging, and arranging special cultural experiences.

Operated by local, multi-lingual guides, African Wildcats provides a highly personalized, authentic experience that quickly makes one feel more like a welcomed visitor rather than a faceless tourist. Their detailed knowledge of animals, birds, flora, and fauna is extremely impressive; as is their ability to navigate the large, and occasionally challenging terrain of this rugged, beautiful land. Jacob, our driver and guide for the duration of the trip, went out of his way to make sure that our safari was everything we wanted it to be and more. Our adventures and encounters were far too numerous to document in this forum, but some of the highlights include:

A walking safari in Arusha National Park trekking alongside creatures of this land, such as baboons, monkeys, cape buffalo, warthogs, and a very cool tower of giraffe.

Elephants of all sizes, birds of prey, and the ancient Baobab trees of Tarangire National Park.

A male and female lion sleeping in a roadside tree, oblivious to the photo seeking paparazzi below.

The sight and sounds of between 100-200 hundred hippos trying to stay cool in the pool formed where the Seronera and Orangi rivers converge.

Being within meters of the “other” big cats of the Serengeti including leopards, cheetahs, and some of the cutest lion cubs one could hope to see.

Being blessed to observe a dozen, highly endangered, Black rhinos in Ngorongoro Crater.
(Including a baby!)

Tagging along on a morning hunt with Hadzabe tribal members, marveling at the blacksmith skills of the Datoga, and hiking over hill and dale with our personal Maasai guide to visit a local village.

and if I had to pick a favorite;

Enjoying coffee and picnic breakfast (in our vehicle) smack in the middle of the great wildebeest migration.

I realize that many see this as a potentially exciting, yet daunting trip, likely to be deemed inaccessible for most people due to potential unknowns and preconceived notions. Let me say, without a doubt, there is nothing to fear and that African Wildcats is the perfect company to turn one’s African safari dream into the experience of a lifetime. In short, trust in the AW team to work their magic. Booking with them was one of the best decisions I have ever made I hope that this brief review will encourage others to do the same.

They know how to find the animals they gave us… read more their knowledge about animals and Massaii culture.
